The XTAR VC2SL is the mid-range step up from the VC2, delivering 1A of charge current per slot instead of 0.5A. For vapers who run dual-battery box mods and want fully charged cells ready before a night out rather than the next morning, the faster charge rate makes a genuine practical difference. A 3,000mAh 18650 from flat reaches 4.2V in approximately three hours at 1A versus five to six hours at 0.5A.
The SL designation refers to the slim-profile bay design that accommodates the wider 21700 format used by many current-generation high-capacity mods. Like all XTAR chargers, the VC2SL uses a constant-current / constant-voltage (CC/CV) charge algorithm that protects cell chemistry while filling the battery efficiently. At £10.99, it sits in an accessible price band for vapers who want genuine charging capability rather than the slowest viable option.
The core difference is charge current. The VC2 charges at 0.5A per slot; the VC2SL charges at 1A per slot. At 1A, a 3,000mAh 18650 takes roughly three hours from flat; at 0.5A, the same cell takes five to six hours. If you vape during the day and want charged spares ready for the evening, the VC2SL fits that window where the VC2 does not.
The SL bays are also slightly wider, giving cleaner contact with 21700 cells that are marginally thicker than 18650. Both chargers share the same LCD display, compatible cell range and protection suite. The VC2SL costs £3 more than the VC2 at VapeCity. For most vapers running 21700 mods or who simply want faster turnaround, the VC2SL is the better buy.
The VC2SL works with any cylindrical Li-ion cell from 10440 to 26650. Cells commonly used in vaping: 18650 (the most widespread format, used in single and dual-battery regulated mods); 21700 (higher-capacity format in current-generation mods like the Geekvape Aegis series and Vaporesso range); 20700 (less common but still used in some transitional-era mods). Compact pen devices using 16340 cells also charge correctly.
Each slot adjusts automatically to cell length via spring contacts. Insert any supported cell positive-end first and the bay grips it correctly regardless of size. Both slots are active simultaneously at 1A each, drawing a total of 2A from the USB supply. Use a 5V/2A wall adapter for best results.
XTAR builds the VC2SL with the same protection suite found across their professional charger range. Automatic cut-off at 4.2V (±1%) halts charging when cells are full, then switches to a trickle maintenance mode. Reverse polarity detection prevents damage from backwards-inserted cells. Short-circuit protection activates if a fault is detected in the circuit.
The LCD screen is the key safety tool for vapers: monitoring voltage over time shows you whether your cells are degrading. A healthy 18650 should reach 4.18--4.20V on a quality charger. Cells that plateau at 4.10V or below, or that charge unusually quickly, are reaching end of life and should be replaced before use in high-drain applications.
If you run a dual-battery mod and want a reliable, safe external charger with genuinely useful voltage monitoring, the VC2SL is the right choice in the XTAR line-up for most vapers. It charges faster than the entry-level VC2 without the premium price of the USB-C X2. The LCD display is more useful than simple LED indicators for tracking battery health over time.
The one limitation is the micro-USB input. If you want USB-C input and even faster charge rates, the XTAR X2 is the natural next step. But for straightforward 18650 and 21700 care at a mid-range price, the VC2SL delivers.
