The XTAR VC2 is XTAR's entry-level dual-slot Li-ion charger, designed for vapers who run regulated box mods with removable 18650 or 21700 batteries. At £7.99 it delivers the core functionality serious vapers need: real-time voltage monitoring via an LCD screen, independent charging channels, and an automatic 4.2V cut-off that protects cells from overcharge damage.
XTAR has been manufacturing Li-ion battery management equipment since 2008 and supplies chargers to both the vape and flashlight communities worldwide. The VC2 sits at the accessible end of their range but retains the safety features that make XTAR a trusted name: reverse polarity protection, short-circuit protection, and a steady 0.5A constant-current charge that is easy on battery chemistry. If you use a regulated mod with removable cells, having a dedicated external charger rather than relying solely on USB pass-through extends overall battery lifespan.
The VC2 handles any cylindrical Li-ion cell between 10440 and 26650 in size. In practice this means: the common 18650 cells used in the vast majority of single and dual-battery box mods; 20700 and 21700 cells found in higher-capacity regulated mods; the smaller 16340 and 14500 cells used in compact vape pens; and the larger 26650 cells used in some high-drain mechanical and sub-ohm setups.
The spring-loaded contacts adjust automatically to cell length, so there is no tray-swapping needed when you switch between cell sizes. Each slot operates independently, meaning you can charge a half-drained 18650 in one bay alongside a fully flat 21700 in the other without either interfering with the other's charge cycle.
The VC2 includes four key protection circuits: automatic cut-off at 4.2V (±1%), reverse polarity detection that prevents damage if a battery is inserted backwards, short-circuit protection, and temperature monitoring that pauses charging if the charger itself overheats during extended use.
The 0.5A per-slot charge rate is intentionally conservative. Faster chargers can push cells to full in less time but generate more heat during the CC (constant-current) phase, which gradually degrades battery chemistry over hundreds of cycles. At 0.5A, an 18650 at 3,000mAh capacity reaches full charge in roughly five to six hours. For overnight charging this is ideal: plug in before bed, wake up to fully charged, protected cells.
Remove batteries from your mod. Insert each cell positive-end first into a slot, pressing gently until the spring contacts grip. The LCD screen lights up immediately and displays the current voltage for each slot. A solid bar animation on the LCD indicates charging is in progress; when the bar is full and the voltage reads 4.20V the charge cycle is complete and the charger switches to trickle maintenance mode.
Use a USB power source rated at 5V/1A or above. Standard phone chargers work well. Avoid using ports from older computers that may drop voltage under load, as this can slow the charge rate or interrupt the cycle.
For vapers running a single or dual-battery regulated mod who want a no-fuss, safe external charger at a fair price, the XTAR VC2 delivers exactly what is needed. The LCD voltage display is genuinely useful for monitoring battery health over time: cells that no longer reach 4.20V or that plateau early are showing signs of age and should be replaced. The VC2 makes spotting this easy.
If you need faster charge times or USB-C input, the VC2SL and X2 in the XTAR range step up to those specs. But for everyday 18650 care at the lowest price point, the VC2 is a solid, safe choice.
