These are the replacement heads for the old guard: the Aspire CE5, the ET series, the classic clearomisers that put Aspire on the map. BVC stands for Bottom Vertical Coil, the design Aspire built to fix the wicking problem that dogged the early top-coil tanks, and it worked well enough that these heads are still in production years after the trend moved on. If you are still running one of those tanks, this is the coil that keeps it honest.
You get two resistances, 1.6 ohm and 1.8 ohm, both mouth-to-lung, differing mainly in how warm and how tight the draw feels. They come five to a pack at £31.99. There is nothing flashy here, just a coil that has earned its keep for a decade. If you are browsing the wider Aspire range for a newer setup, that is the place to start, but plenty of people keep a classic clearomiser going precisely because it just works.
Rewind to the early clearomisers and most coils sat at the top of the tank. The wick had to haul e-liquid upward against gravity from the reservoir below, and that fell apart as the level dropped. Half a tank in, the draw changed. A quarter left, and dry hits arrived like an unwanted guest.
Aspire flipped it. The BVC head sits at the bottom of the tank, below the liquid line, so the coil is sitting in a pool rather than straining to reach one. Stand the coil vertically inside that head and the heat spreads evenly across the wick, which keeps hotspots down.
The payoff is a draw that holds steady from the first puff on a full tank to the last on a near-empty one. Prime it properly and dry hits are rare, with flavour staying level the whole way through. That consistency is exactly why BVC clearomisers outlived their top-coil rivals, and why Aspire still bothers making these heads.
The 1.6 ohm is happiest around 13 to 16 watts. It puts a bit of warmth into the vapour, which many people find more satisfying than a cool draw, and it pushes slightly more cloud than the 1.8 ohm. It suits someone who has been vaping a while and wants a touch more presence from a classic MTL setup.
The 1.8 ohm runs at 10 to 14 watts and gives the coolest, tightest draw in the range. The vapour sits closer to the cool feel of a cigarette and the draw is more restricted. For anyone fresh off smoking, that is often the more comfortable starting point, because the sensation matches what the hand and lungs already expect.
Both get on well with 50/50 juices and nic salts. You can run higher-VG liquids, but anything above 60% wicks slowly at 1.8 ohm and may give dry notes. If 70/30 is your regular, the 1.6 ohm handles the thicker juice more gracefully.
Priming is non-negotiable on a BVC head. The cotton has to be soaked before it ever sees heat, or the first pull tastes of bonfire and the coil is ruined before you start.
Almost every complaint traces back to priming or a flooded chamber, not a duff coil. Run through these first.
Burnt taste on a new coil
It was fired before the cotton soaked. There is no saving a scorched coil, so fit a fresh one and prime it properly this time.
Burnt taste after a week or two
The coil has simply worn out, faster on sweet juices. Swap in a new one from the pack.
Gurgling or flooded draws
Usually too much liquid in the chamber or a loose coil. Check it is screwed in snug, and take slower, fuller draws.
Weak or muted flavour
Either the tank is low or the coil is past its best. Top up first; if it does not improve, replace the coil.
