Nicotine salt (nic salt) uses a different chemical form of nicotine — benzoic acid is added to freebase nicotine, which lowers the pH and produces a smoother vapour at equivalent concentrations. The practical effect is that 18mg nic salt delivers a significantly less harsh throat hit than 18mg freebase nicotine. Nic salts are the basis for most pod kit e-liquids for this reason — they allow higher nicotine concentrations to be delivered smoothly.
The Nic Nic Salt Shot allows you to bring this nic salt advantage to shortfill use. Adding the salt shot to a 0mg shortfill base creates a finished e-liquid with nic salt nicotine chemistry — useful if you want to use a shortfill-format flavour in a sub-ohm or DL device but find standard freebase shots too harsh at the concentration you need.
Freebase nicotine (used in the Nic Nic 50% VG, 70% VG and ice shots) is the standard form. At concentrations above 6mg in a 70/30 VG base used in a DL device, freebase nicotine produces a notable throat hit that is part of the appeal for many vapers but can be harsh for others. For sub-ohm use particularly, the combination of high airflow, warm coil and freebase nicotine above 6mg can feel uncomfortably sharp.
Nic salt removes this harshness while maintaining nicotine delivery efficiency. A 3mg nic salt in a shortfill will feel significantly smoother than 3mg freebase in the same shortfill and device. For vapers who use DL devices but want higher nicotine without harshness, the salt shot is the technical solution.
See also the Nic Nic 70% VG shot for the standard freebase option.
Use exactly as you would a freebase nic shot: add the 10ml to a 100ml shortfill in a 120ml bottle, cap, shake and leave to steep. The ratio compatibility rule still applies — consider the VG/PG ratio of the salt shot versus your shortfill when selecting. One salt shot added to 100ml gives approximately 1.5mg at 110ml total.
For pod kits specifically: most shortfill e-liquids (70/30 VG/PG) are not ideally suited to pod kits even with a salt shot added, because pod kits are designed for 50/50 blends. The 50/50 based shortfills such as Wild Roots with a nic salt shot are a better match for pod kit use.
